Weed in Prague, Czech Republic: My Experience
Hi, smokers! You probably know that cannabis laws and regulations vary from one country to another, so let’s dive deeper into what’s going on with weed in Prague. My post covers information about weed laws, regulations, general attitude of locals and cops, hash vs weed availability and pricing, failures and successes in finding weed in Prague.
I’ve just finished my trip to Prague, stayed there for about 10 days, and now I’m back home writing this post while the memories are fresh (and with a joint in my hand). As a regular weed smoker, I couldn’t imagine staying in Prague without having some green buds in my pocket. Below I’ll share what I found while searching for weed in Prague
Where can one acquire cannabis in Prague?
though I personally didn’t have much trouble getting cannabis in Prague, I learned from locals that the scene here is quite unique.
Street dealers are common in central areas like Wenceslas Square and Old Town, where they’ll often approach tourists offering “weed, coke, hash.” But a big warning here: most of the time they’re trying to scam you or sell you something fake (often herbs or poor-quality stuff). Many tourists fall into this trap.
The safer way is to find local connections through bars, hostels, or friends. Increasingly, people use encrypted messengers or social media contacts to arrange orders with delivery. Payments can sometimes be done in crypto, but cash is still very common here compared to other European cities.
Prague is also famous for its cannabis culture cafés and bars, where you’ll easily meet people who can hook you up. Just don’t expect Amsterdam-style coffee shops—Prague doesn’t have legal dispensaries, so everything happens underground.
Cannabis laws in Prague, Czech Republic
Unlike many countries, the Czech Republic has a fairly tolerant approach to weed. Technically, cannabis for personal use is decriminalized, not legalized. This means you won’t go to jail for having a small amount, but it’s still considered an offense.
In simple terms: having up to 10 grams of weed or 5 grams of hash for personal use is treated as a misdemeanor, not a crime. Anything above that, or selling/distributing, is illegal and can get you into serious trouble.
What are the consequences of being caught with marijuana in Prague?
In reality, as Sam pointed out, if you’re over 18 and possess fewer than 20 grams of cannabis or 10 grams of hashish and refrain from public consumption, you shouldn’t anticipate any legal trouble. At most, law enforcement may seize your belongings once they confirm you’re not involved in distribution.
Typically, law enforcement officers do not interfere with foreign tourists who are enjoying their vacation or conducting business trips in Lisbon and contributing to the economy of Portugal.
Attitude of Prague locals to weed
You already know that good non-medical marijuana with high % THC is not something you can officially buy in a branded cannabis shop in Lisbon, but this does not mean locals are too much against weed . Youngsters and students are definitely those who share their love of cannabis and welcome new smokers in their circles. They can not imagine a good party without having a joint or two, while it’s hard to join them if you are already a “25+ old man”.
In general smoking some occasional joint after a long working week is a pleasant tradition among many people in Lisbon, so no one will point fingers at you seeing how you are smoking weed, but better to avoid doing this publicly just not to bring useless attention.
The overall attitude of locals to weed is rather relaxed, so you may even feel yourself home in Lisbon after one good joint, telling this from my own experience. Sam shared with me a joint of simply perfect sativa (while he did not know the exact strain). We were smoking outside the bar, and saw other guys doing the same on the other side of the street So I can definitely say that smoking weed is rather popular in Lisbon.
I’ve asked Sam if he may share contacts of his dealer, cause stuff was out of this world. He told me that his exact dealer does not work with new people, so he will be my dealer during my vacation, which was simply perfect. I wish everyone to find your own Sam in some bar of Prague.
